The role of the Software Engineering Group Manager helps manage multiple Software Engineering teams, typically consisting of 4-8 reports. This role assists with ownership of product or platform features, as well as management for the Software Engineering group. This role must be able to set clear goals, define metrics, and track progress.


Responsibilities

Includes, but not limited to:
  • Clarifies ownership and decision making for the development teams
  • Able to represent and be accountable for the technical output of the dev teams, either through personal experience or strong communication lines with senior engineers
  • Attends team planning meetings to monitor and adjust team pace
  • Contributes to strategic direction, planning the roadmap, escalating issues, and synthesizing feedback to ensure team success
  • Discuss implementation questions or problems encountered by development team members
  • Reviews and provides input on design documents as requested
  • Contributes to the public facing forums, help respond to requests in a timely manner
  • Resolves interpersonal and technical conflict within and outside the team
  • Responsible for coaching, development, and career management, including performance reviews

Required skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Written communication skills – able to document issues effectively and concisely
  • Strong programming skills – using Java and Python
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies such as SCRUM
  • Familiarity with source control management systems such as Github
  • Experience with managing software teams of 4 or more employees
  • 8 years of industry experience. Degree is helpful but not required
