MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation minded Tribal Relations Zone Resource Assistant (RA) Interns who will work with the Regional Tribal Relations Director of the Pacific Southwest Region of the USDA Forest Service (Region 5) cultivating collaboration with Tribes in California. As a Tribal Relations Intern, your work will involve working with (and reporting) to local forest Tribal Liaisons, utilizing their facilities as needed to assist with the development and implementation of partnership opportunities, outreach and educational programs, Cooperative Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding with tribes, and to provide guidance on protocol. Overall, you will develop and foster good, positive relationships with tribes to facilitate the consultation process and to further potential partnerships. This position will require travel across the Zone and a good driving record.
The Resource Assistant's Program is designed for emerging professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills.

Duty Stations: You will be assigned to one of the four Zones in CA in Region 5. Location within Zone is negotiable.
Term: 32 weeks, starting in June 6, 2022;Full Time/40 hours per week

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with forest Tribal Liaisons to identify tribal capacity to enter into FS/Tribal agreements for forest restoration, fuels management, and other collaborations.
- Assist in building, maintaining, and engaging in positive relationships between the Forest Service (FS) and tribal stakeholders such as including tribal staff, intertribal organizations, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
- Participate in discussions with the FS and Tribes for information sharing, collaboration, and government-to-government consultation.
- Develop clearly written correspondence, procedures, and other communication materials for various stakeholders including tribal audiences.
- Help with translating strategies into plans and actions, identify improvements needed in a wide range of administrative areas, and report OTR initiatives.
- Assist in the review and analysis of Federal regulations, research reports, and data from tribal communities. Identify issues, trends, and best practices and use data to ensure effective outreach, technical assistance, and guidance.
- Prepares briefing documents, summaries of tribal relations and consultation activities, and summaries of specific tribal concerns.
- Assist in developing program-related guidance, training materials and training opportunities with tribal members and/or tribal governments.
- Participate in the coordination of meetings and site visits, taking notes and creating records, helping to draft partnership agreements, exposure to local archaeology and/or traditional gathering areas where tribes have concerns or ideas for restoration/protection.
- Helpful to have knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), American Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Work Environment:
The majority of the RA’s work will be done in the field. The RA will be required to travel and attend field trips with forest and/or tribes independently and in teams. Office work as needed.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Native American Studies, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Education, or Forestry.
- Prefer experience working with Tribal governments, tribal entities, or tribal organizations or genuine interest in working with tribes. Native Americans encouraged to apply.
- Excellent communication skills
- Proficient with public engagement
- Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.
- Good time management skills.
- Maintain a valid driver license.
