The Managed Applications Development team is focused on building features and scaling solutions into the platform that powers Nexcess Managed Hosting content and ecommerce applications for our customers.  We are looking for a mid-level software engineer to join our passionate, collaborative, and globally distributed team.  An ideal candidate should be well versed in PHP, or have a strong background in one or more object oriented languages and eager to learn a new one. Additionally, candidates with a background in Web Hosting and Linux System Administration are highly desired.

We are looking for a mid-level or senior-level Software Engineer to join our team focused on development in the WordPress space.  This is a 100% remote position working on a remote-first team building highly scalable software solutions used across all existing and future managed WordPress hosting clients.

As a Software Engineer you would:
  • Develop new software solutions and maintain existing applications
  • Write clean code as part of a team of software developers
  • Work collaboratively in an environment of continuous delivery
  • Research new technologies that will improve our existing code
  • Refactor existing code to leverage greater amounts of automation
  • Create acceptance tests for all the code created
  • Create, review, and update technical documentation
  • Provide constructive feedback and mentoring to other team members
  • Integrate existing third party products into the platform via API use (and creation)
  • Monitor existing issues and create ways to eliminate them

You Have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience creating WordPress plugins and/or themes
  • Thorough understanding of MySQL
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate data
  • Deep experience with software system design
  • Demonstrated ability to write both internal and customer-facing documentation
  • Ability to deliver effectively in a remote environment
  • Experience articulating software requirements
  • Proven abilities across the software development lifecycle
  • An interest in continuous learning and professional growth

Bonus Points for:
  • Deep experience (5+ years) building solutions with WordPress and/or WooCommerce
  • Experience coaching and mentoring other developers
  • Experience building web applications with modern PHP frameworks like Laravel, Symfony, etc.
  • Experience crafting applications using modern PHP (ex: autoloading, dependency management, dependency injection, templating libraries, automated testing, OOP)
  • Experience with JS application frameworks (especially React and Vue)
  • Experience with deployment automation (GitLab, Travis, GitHub Actions)
  • Exceptional HTML &CSS skills
  • Previous experience developing solutions with a focus on user experience and accessibility
