We Work Remotely
Do you have a passion for sport? Do you want to grow your career in software development but would also love to work in the business of sport? Do you want to work on a ground-breaking product? Are you looking for a company that will invest time in your development, support your professional growth and listen to your ideas?

You may have found your dream job, and we may have found our dream hire!

Help the world to play more sport

Sports facilities are lying idle during the day all over the world. One reason for this is that people can’t find and book their local sports facilities online.

At SportsKey, we aim to fix this problem by providing easy to use sports facility management and online booking software-as-a-service that makes it simple for venues to manage and promote their sports facilities, resulting in a dramatic reduction in admin and increased revenue for the venue, and ultimately more people playing sport.

Our long-term vision is to help the world play more sport. In the short-term, we are on a mission to help 20 million people play sport by 2024, and so far we’re 40% there!

To achieve this, we need to maintain our high customer satisfaction and simultaneously drive our core SaaS product forward. That’s where you come in.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Ruby on Rails developer with the passion to develop an easy-to-use product that solves real problems for real people. This is primarily an individual contributor role, but there’s a path to grow into a leadership role if you aspire to that.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

·      Planning and building improvements, new features and whole new product initiatives for our core Rails application
·      Actively contributing to product planning from conception, including discovery, UX and architecture decisions
·      Upholding our high technical standards and processes regarding code quality, testing, performance and security
·      Performing code reviews and mentoring less experienced developers
·      Supporting the more junior developers on the team

We’re a small, growing company with a dedicated and passionate team and a growing base of loyal customers, and you’ll play a big part in our continued success in this role.

Our stack includes Ruby on Rails 7 with Hotwire, PostgreSQL, Bootstrap, Heroku, Cloudflare, AWS S3, Stripe, Github, AppSignal &Mailgun. We collaborate using Trello, Slack, and Github. We have excellent test coverage and confidently deploy to staging and production multiple times a day.

We have several new product initiatives lined up, as well as a big bag of improvements and UI/UX enhancements. It will not get boring here anytime soon.

Your title will be Product Engineer, Senior Product Engineer or Lead Product Engineer, depending on experience.

What we are looking for

We need you to hit the ground running on our tech stack so you can focus on learning about our product and customers instead of catching up on the basics:

·      Ruby on Rails (significant experience on commercial products)
·      JavaScript (significant production experience, ideally some Stimulus/Hotwire experience)
·      PostgreSQL or similar (way beyond ActiveRecord – you know how to keep a growing database performant and available)

On top of these purely technical skills, we’re looking for a true self-starter capable of working autonomously and executing small and large projects from start to finish, by yourself or with a small team, in close collaboration with stakeholders from the leadership, sales and customer success teams. Basically managers of one, to steal a term from 37signals.

The more of these boxes you tick, the better:

·      You’ve worked as a professional software developer for at least 5 years, ideally with big responsibilities in small companies rather than vice versa
·      You have experience driving the architecture and design of new and existing products.
·      You are a passionate software developer and care about your craft. You are excited to learn, lead projects and want to produce your best work possible.
·      You don’t shy away from responsibility for delivering outcomes.
·      The discovery and UX planning of new features and products are a core part of your skillset and you see it as critical to your success in delivering outcomes
·      You understand business priorities and how to balance them with technical considerations
·      You have mentored or coached junior engineers before.

Remote (Ireland)

This is a full-time, permanent position. Most of us are based in Ireland, but this is a fully remote role. We communicate mostly online but try to get together regularly enough for socialising and occasional in-person collaboration. We are accepting applications from anywhere in Europe.

Our interview process

·      We’ll invite you to take a quick online Ruby quiz to avoid wasting each other’s time
·      We follow that with a 30 minute call with Thilo, our CTO, to talk about your career path and answer your questions
·      Next is a 90 minute online technical interview, to get a sense on your technical experience
·      Finally, we’ll have a 30 minute call with Craig, our founder and CEO, to validate culture fit and align expectations.

How to apply

·      Email us at careers@sportskey.com with a detailed cover letter where you explain why you are interested in this role and what makes you a great fit.
·      As a remote team, clear and efficient communication is critical. That requires fluent English and above-average writing. We'll be looking at this closely throughout the interview process, starting with your cover letter. Please take your time.
·      We would also ask you to take this quick Ruby skill test - it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes: https://ide.codingame.com/invite/7954927a27b5ea6dcc
