We Work Remotely
About the Work
Our marketing team, comprising a designer, copywriter, coordinator, and product marketing manager, has excelled in creating and distributing content to our market. Now, we're searching for a leader who can not only quantify but also sharpen our marketing endeavors. As the head of the marketing team, you'll be guiding and nurturing this diverse group of marketing professionals. Your role will be crucial in steering the department's growth and fostering the development of each team member with understanding and empathy.

In addition to leading the marketing team, the successful candidate will also be a key member of the Planning Center leadership team. In this role, you'll contribute to company-wide decisions, aligning with our three loves: We Love Our Churches, We Love Our Team, and We Love Our Products. Your insights and expertise will be instrumental in shaping our strategies across the organization, ensuring that every decision supports our mission and reflects our commitment to these loves.

A typical week encompasses, but is not limited to, these responsibilities:

  • Setting long-term branding and strategic goals, aligning marketing efforts with company-wide objectives, and developing customer acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Leading the effective execution of marketing strategies and campaigns.
  • Hands-on work for key projects, demonstrating a willingness to dive in and get your hands dirty, actively participating in the nitty-gritty of marketing tasks and campaigns as needed.
  • Investing in your team, fostering their growth, and helping them do their best work, with marketing and company goals in mind.
  • Creating and optimizing marketing automation and leading nurturing processes across multiple channels to improve customer engagement.
  • Growing brand recognition and fostering our existing reputation to enhance brand impact and customer experience.
  • Investing in cross-functional collaboration, working effectively with our support department, product department, and external partners to enhance overall brand impact and customer experience.

We also feel it's important to mention what will NOT be expected of you:

  • You will not engage in practices that violate user privacy or misuse data. Our commitment is to steer clear of ad-tech solutions that could compromise our users' trust and our value on data privacy.
  • You will not employ any marketing strategies that could be deemed questionable or unethical. Our users' confidence in our integrity and commitment to them is paramount, and we avoid tactics that might bring these into question.
  • You will not be prescribing specific methods of church management or ministry. We recognize the diversity of our churches' approaches and believe in enabling them to conduct their ministry as they see fit rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all solution.
  • You will not push our product as the only solution for every church. While we strive for churches to utilize our product, our primary goal is to see them succeed, even if it means they find another product that better suits their unique needs. We prioritize the success and well-being of churches over exclusive product loyalty.

Who You Are

Our ideal candidate would have most, if not all, of the following qualifications:

  • You have led a growth marketing team in a previous role, demonstrating effective team management, mentoring, and the ability to foster a collaborative work environment.
  • You have developed and executed successful marketing strategies aligning with company-wide objectives and have significantly impacted business growth.
  • You have experience in customer acquisition and retention, utilizing various marketing techniques and strategies tailored to different audience segments.
  • You have managed a multi-million dollar marketing budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources while closely monitoring and optimizing ROI.
  • You have innovated with inbound marketing campaigns, leveraging tools like SEO, AdWords, social media, email marketing, and marketing automation to drive results.
  • You have hands-on experience with key marketing systems, such as marketing automation tools and analytics platforms.
  • You have a strong background in content development and digital marketing, including managing editorial calendars and experimenting with various online marketing tactics.
  • You have expertise in data analysis and market research, utilizing insights to inform strategy and measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.
  • You have stayed up-to-date with industry trends and competitor strategies, ensuring your marketing strategies are current and effective.

We're seeking a candidate who is available to work in our Carlsbad office every Thursday (with relocation support offered). However, exceptional remote applicants who can commit to visiting the office monthly may also be considered.

The Hiring Process
During the hiring process, you’ll have a chance to interact with numerous team members. We strongly encourage you to bring questions to each stage of the interview process. You’re interviewing us as much as we’re interviewing you.

Due to the nature of this position, applications will be accepted until we fill this role. If applying, please note that we will do our best to move candidates through the interview process quickly, but we intend to hire the right person, which will likely take time. We appreciate your patience.

Below is an outline of our hiring process.

  • Step One: Apply with a resume, portfolio of work/projects you've worked on, and a cover letter. Your cover letter should speak directly to your interest in this position. We want to know what got you into marketing, how your experience has set you up for success in this role, and why you want to join our team.

(A word of caution for those using AI cover letters: When compared to the hundreds of other candidates who did the exact same thing, it becomes painfully obvious who took the AI first draft. If you're going to use these tools, we ask that you use them well. Give our team something a bit more human to read.)

  • Step Two: Initial Screening - We'll conduct a preliminary interview to get a rough understanding of your experience. (30 mins.)
  • Step Three: CEO Prelim Interview - You'll have a short interview with our CEO covering questions about you, and your chosen career path. (30-45 mins.)
  • Step Four: Work and Process interview - You'll interview with several directors from across Planning Center so we can get a grasp of how you work across departments. (60 mins.)
  • Step Five: Marketing and Career Interview - You'll interview with our CEO and the Director of People Operations. (60 mins.)
  • Step Six: Marketing Team Interview - You'll have an interview with the team you'll be leading. (45 mins.)
  • Step Seven: Leadership Interview - You'll have an interview with the Planning Center Leadership team (45-60 mins.)
  • Step Eight - Pending all goes well, you'll be offered the position.

* Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet ~60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups in tech, tend to apply only when they check every box. If you’re unsure if your experience qualifies strong competency, we’d still love to hear from you and see if you're a good fit!
