We’re implementing new systems, processes, and controls to help make Basecamp a more capable company. As such, we’re looking for an experienced candidate who’s done similar work elsewhere.
About the Work
In this role you will:
- Manage the timely completion of the month and year-end close, ensuring our Intacct GL financials are in line with GAAP standards.
- Develop and maintain processes to ensure the proper accounting of our subscription revenue.
- Manage relationships with external accounting, banking, and payment processing vendors.
- Oversee the automated monthly sales tax payments we make to various US states and international countries, and file manual returns in jurisdictions where automated filings aren't supported. You'll also work with our CPA firm on establishing Basecamp's presence in new jurisdictions.
- Manage Accounts Payable, Payroll and our expense management tool.
- Identify gaps in controls, create solutions to address them, and prioritize their rollout thoughtfully.
About You
You have experience managing the accounting function for a small to mid-sized software company with a global footprint. You’ve implemented or optimized accounting systems and processes that have minimized manual work and enabled a small team to achieve outstanding results.
You’re comfortable as a manager of one. However, you won’t be on an island. You’ll have support from the Head of Finance, our external CPA firm, and other resources you deem necessary to get the job done.
You have an excellent grasp of GAAP accounting, with specific experience in accounting issues related to software as a service companies. You’ve implemented controls where needed without slowing down the momentum of the business. You have strong opinions about how your chart of accounts is structured.
You approach your work with a spirit of partnership and collaboration, not exclusion or rigidness. You build strong relationships across the business, whether you're resolving billing issues with customer support or tracking fixed asset purchases with our ops team. You're a resourceful problem solver;you can feel for gaps in what you're working on, pitch solutions and implement them. You enjoy building things from scratch based on the wisdom of your collective experience.
This is a remote position, however as a U.S-based company, we’re only considering candidates who live in the United States. This position requires working hours that overlap closely with those of our Head of Finance, who lives in Chicago.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and identities to apply for a job where they can do the best work of their career. Basecamp is committed to being a calm company where we don't regularly work longer than 40 hours a week and take proper vacations.
What To Expect
You can expect a mindful onboarding process with structured ramp-up time. You can expect a team that listens. You can expect to be counted on and the freedom to do your best work. We build our apps, our teams, and our company for the long haul, so you can build your career here if you choose to.
You should be comfortable working remotely. This means that the bulk of our work is written, whether that be in the form of long reports or short chats. We value good writers.
We respect everyone's right to participate in political expression and activism, but avoid having political debates on our internal communication systems. Basecamp as a company also does not weigh in on politics publicly, outside of topics directly related to our business. You should be at peace with both of these stances.
Pay and benefits
Basecamp pays in the top 10% of the industry, for the matched role and experience, based on San Francisco rates. This comes to a range between $166,829 and $218,633, based on seniority and experience. No matter where you live. Plus, with two years under your belt, you’ll participate in our profit-sharing program.
Our benefits support a life well-lived away from work. Ample time off and all the resources you need to support you in doing the best work of your career. Here's more on the benefits we offer.
How to apply
Please send an application tailored to this position that speaks to us. Introduce yourself to us as a colleague. Give us some examples of how you’ve helped build well-oiled accounting machines in the past. As we said, we value great writers, so please do take your time with the application. Forget that generic resume. There’s no prize for being the first to submit!
All that being said, don’t send in a copy of War &Peace. We know you can write volumes, but here you can keep it to fewer than 800 words.

We are accepting applications for this position until Tuesday, February 1 at 5:00PM US-Central time.
We expect to take a few weeks to closely review all applications. You should not expect to hear from us until February 15 (and you will hear from us!). Please note that we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the screening process. We usually see hundreds of applications for roles, and our small hiring team simply doesn’t have the bandwidth to offer personalized feedback before the interview stage.
Interviews will take place in February. Our interviews are conversations held with future colleagues – no tests, no surprises. Then we hope to extend offers by the end of February with a flexible start date in March.
We know this is a demanding application process! We appreciate you giving us that consideration, and we promise to give you our full attention in return. We look forward to hearing from you!
