About Us
Mathesar Foundation is a US-based nonprofit aiming to make data more interoperable and portable through building intuitive and accessible tooling. We maintain the open source project Mathesar, which empowers users to work with PostgreSQL databases without requiring any technical expertise. We embrace open-source principles to ensure data ownership, privacy, and control for our users.

You’ll be joining our small, globally distributed team. We work asynchronously and value work/life balance. Our work is public - look through our code, read our project and team wiki, and join our communication channels.
Role Overview
We are seeking a strategic, detail-oriented, and versatile Chief of Staff to support our CEO with operationalizing our fundraising, accelerating Mathesar’s user growth, and overseeing pivotal administrative functions. Your work will be instrumental in amplifying the reach and effectiveness of the Mathesar open source project and securing the organization’s long-term sustainability.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and senior leadership.
  • Manage our major donor fundraising pipeline, including prioritizing the CEO's meetings, ensuring thorough preparation, and applying insights for future engagements.
  • Collaborate on planning and implementing fundraising strategies from Mathesar users, including both donations and revenue generation.
  • Cultivate and maintain key relationships with stakeholders, donors, and community members to enhance engagement and support.
  • Oversee our user growth initiatives, including conducting research, handling marketing activities, and managing communication channels.
  • Regularly engage with Mathesar users to identify opportunities for increasing Mathesar’s impact, working with the product development team as needed..
  • Provide operational support by optimizing administrative processes and overseeing day-to-day operations.
  • Recruit, onboard, and manage additional resources as needed to support fundraising and growth initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement in fundraising, user growth strategies, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead special projects and initiatives assigned by the CEO as needed.
Requirements
  • Proven experience (3-5 years) in a strategic or managerial role, preferably in a nonprofit or startup environment.
  • Comfortable navigating technical concepts to the extent of (eventually) understanding Mathesar's intricacies and value proposition and being able to discuss them with technical stakeholders with ease.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Self-directed and highly motivated, with the ability to take initiative and work independently to achieve goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, donors, and team members.
  • Proactive and resourceful attitude, with the ability to anticipate needs, identify opportunities, and solve problems effectively.
  • Detail-oriented approach and strong analytical skills, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks and initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, fostering a team-oriented environment and contributing positively to team dynamics.
  • Proficiency in working asynchronously and communicating effectively via text. Previous remote work experience is highly desirable.
  • Naturally curious and enthusiastic about actively seeking out new knowledge and skills.
  • Available for meetings during US Eastern working hours, this is the time zone that our CEO and Director of Operations and Finance are in.
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with open-source culture and principles, i.e. the ethos of community engagement, transparent and direct communication, open exchange of ideas, etc.
  • Prior involvement with nonprofit fundraising or some understanding of how donor outreach, cultivating and stewarding partnerships, and/or fundraising campaigns work.
  • Prior experience working on go-to-market initiatives for tech products, or some understanding of market research, customer engagement and acquisition, and/or positioning and messaging.
  • Prior experience in fostering and nurturing communities, creating strong relationships and encouraging active participation.
  • Prior experience in a Chief of Staff role would be valuable, but is not required.
