Systems and Data Analyst - remote

AdjusterPro
Posted 3 years ago  • Remote

AdjusterPro is hiring a systems &data analyst to help us manage our systems and make sense of our data. We have a lot of systems and a lot of raw data, and we handle all of it half-decently today, but we know we can do a lot better, and our current IT staff is maxed out, so we’re looking to grow the team.

About the systems part of the job

We have a lot going on behind the scenes at AdjusterPro: We use over 150,000 Zapier tasks each month;we have half a dozen apps deployed on Heroku;we add about 100,000 entries each day to our Papertrail archive.

It’s probably all a bit too complicated, but we’ve come by it honestly. As an upstart in our industry we often need to move fast – e.g., by rolling out online exam proctoring in April this year – and we’ve always preferred to automate work that doesn’t require human judgment.

But we’re growing rapidly and it’s time to streamline and unify what we’re doing in IT. You will lead that initiative with the support of our CTO, who built most of this stuff and is eager to see you iterate on it. You will also handle routine maintenance of apps and servers (until you retire those servers and eliminate the need for those apps!);you’ll work with our Compliance Manager on security practices and outage/incident responses;and you may occasionally back up our other IT staff on desktop support.

About the data part of the job

We house our data in Domo, and you will own our Domo instance–to include designing and improving ETLs, building charts, coming up with creative ways to get data into Domo from our more ornery systems, and teaching other employees how to get what they need from Domo.

You will sling data for many audiences, including the company at large, our managers, our owners, and our key vendors – but also our enterprise clients, who usually want more customized insights about their students’ activities than our online-classroom system can provide on its own.

You will produce many pretty charts, but not for their own sake – your goal will always be to help the above-mentioned audiences understand our business as objectively and accurately as possible.

If you had been here in the last few weeks, you might have:

  • Switched us over to our backup web host at 5 in the morning, when our main hosting company went dark for the first time in twenty years – then reviewed the failover process and figured out a way to do it in a fraction of the time, or better yet automatically
  • Built a chart showing exam pass rates for our major course categories, and explained the chart to our Compliance Manager … then re-built the chart when both of you realized that “exam pass rate” is ambiguous and needs to be more clearly defined
  • Redesigned the ETL scheme for our online-classroom data, to deal with the unpredictable timing of its nightly sync to Domo
  • Added a module to our home-grown JavaScript plugin to further customize the student experience in our online classroom, and tweaked the core of the plugin to add client-specific deployment
  • Charted our website’s conversion rate over the past 5 years – for multiple definitions of ‘conversion rate’

You will report directly to our CTO. He can provide you with fairly deep technical support for our existing systems, but he’s really hoping to learn from you as well.

About You

We’re looking for an affable geek, who can dig into details that would make most people’s eyes glaze over, and boil it all down for the non-geeks in the room. You should be comfortable pressing a point that you’re convinced of, especially with management. And since we’re a mostly-remote company, you’ll need to be a clear and concise writer who’s also willing to spend a good chunk of your week on video calls.

You’ll need some good experience with code, servers, and data, and a formal background in statistics might be helpful as well. But beyond basic competence, we’re looking for someone who can demonstrate above-average common sense, creativity, and attention to detail. We love being thrown into the deep end, and if you love that as well, you’ll probably thrive here.

About Us

AdjusterPro was founded by two crazy guys in a Florida garage in 2005 and has since grown to become the nation’s leading provider of claims-adjuster licensing and exam prep courses.

Our revenues are strong and have risen consistently for years, and we are profitable and debt-free. Our customer base is diverse: We serve over 10,000 new individual customers each year, we’re the go-to claims licensing solution for dozens of small and medium-size businesses, and we have multi-year contracts with a handful of Fortune 500 insurance carriers.

Far from being thrown for a loop by the coronavirus debacle, we’re adding staff in 2020 and have solidified plans to go after a new niche in the insurance industry and grow our business substantially over the next few years.

We currently employ 36 people who mostly work from home offices all over the US;we also have a small headquarters in Tempe, AZ. We have a generous holiday schedule as well as paid PTO and family leave;every paycheck includes a health-care stipend;and we will provide you with a very nice computer and the office equipment you need to do your job effectively.

How to apply

Just push the button that says “Apply for this Job” (found at the link below), and follow the instructions. You’ll be asked to upload a resume and a cover letter. It would be very helpful if you were to include at least two of the following in your cover letter:

  • A realistic use case for a full outer join
  • A process (in fairly specific terms) that you might follow to validate that an append operation in an ETL is not producing corrupt output
  • A brief but technically informative description of what Fly is, and whether a business like ours should care
  • Your very own thoughts on information security
  • Anything else in the spirit of the bullets above, that will help us understand why you’re a good fit for this position

What to expect after you apply

The initial interview will be over the phone with our HR specialist. The second stage of interviews will take place over Zoom with our Hiring team (including the CTO and HR). Our remaining candidates will complete a skill-set and professional communication assessment.
