Role: Operations lead - community, growth and marketing | Full time, Remote
Comp: $50k-$75k plus healthcare &bonus
Opportunity: Would you like to build a personal network with the CTOs of hundreds of top venture backed tech startups while learning from an experienced entrepreneur, accelerating your career and scaling with a fast growth, highly influential business? CTO Connection is a profitable startup that is building the premier community for senior engineering leaders. We’re looking for a smart, ambitious and passionate operations lead to help to scale the business, with at least 1-2 years of experience working at startups.
Hi! My name’s Peter Bell. I’ve taught digital literacy and data science at Columbia Business School, ran the engineering team at General Assembly, built out remote first instructional and curriculum teams at Flatiron School and created books and videos for O’Reilly, Pearson, Pluralsight and more. https://www.linkedin.com/in/peterfbell/
Back in 2014, I founded CTO Connection as a hobby to run single day, single track in-person events for senior engineering leaders. The long term vision was always to build a community to help senior engineering leaders to share best practices for building and managing engineering teams. If software is “eating the world”, a great leverage point is to focus on helping engineering leaders to create better software and more effective and inclusive workplaces for their teams.
By the end of 2019, we’d got so much traction I had to give up the day job to focus on the business. We now have an online-first model (thanks covid!), are profitable, and it’s time to scale our systems - and our impact.
To date, we’re super lean. We have a few devs in Ukraine building out a community platform and a virtual assistant in the Philippines. Now I’m looking for a smart, motivated and capable operations person to help engage with sponsors, speakers and attendees, to run operations and to help build out the systems that will allow us to scale.
I’ve been building companies for decades, but this is the first one that is sustainable, profitable and growing quickly - we’ve got product market fit, a good understanding of (and credibility) with the key audiences and just need to ramp up the systems to 10x the business over the next 2-3 years.
About the role
You will be the public face of the company with sponsors, speakers and attendees, ensuring they get their questions answered and get the maximum benefit from working with us
You will also be responsible for building out systems to reduce the effort required to keep the business running. We need a much richer database of members, more efficient processes for engaging with sponsors, speakers and attendees and a marketing “machine” we can use to consistently engage with and onboard more engineering leaders in the US and beyond.
Day one this will be a very hands on operational role. However, the heart of the role is to create new systems so that we can scale the business - both in terms of impact and in terms of launching new products.
Initially it’ll be a front line role, with lots of direct contact with our stakeholders. Over time there is the opportunity to grow into management or even executive leadership as we increase revenues and scale out the organization.
There will also be a small amount of travel required. We may run up to 8 in-person summits a year in the US and 1-2 internationally, so there could be a few days a month of travel (under 10%). If that’s an absolute blocker, please do still apply as we may be able to work round that.
The compensation range for the role is $50k-$75k with full coverage of healthcare. There will also be some kind of bonus/incentive package depending on the company's growth. You will need to be authorized to work in the US - at the moment we’re not yet ready to sponsor visas, and while the position is remote, we are looking for an employee based in the US.
About you
- You’ll need at least 1-2 years of work experience - ideally with one or more early stage startups
- You should have very strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging with our members, speakers and sponsors - many of whom are senior leaders at fast growth, venture funded tech startups
- You should have very strong analytical skills for identifying opportunities to track or improve the efficiency of the business
- You should be extremely self motivated. There will be daily standups, weekly 1:1’s and meetings to kick off and retrospect specific projects, but you’ll be responsible for managing your time and adding the maximum possible value despite ongoing interruptions from stakeholders.
- You should also be passionate about the intersection of community, education and technology
- If you happen to have some technical skills (using GitHub, scripting in Python, etc) that’s a bonus, but not a requirement.
The position is available immediately and we’d hope to extend a job offer to the right candidate within the month, so if you’re interested, apply now by filling out the form below!
