Full Stack Developer - remote

Network Canvas
Posted 10 months ago
Network Canvas (www.networkcanvas.com) is a suite of open-source tools for designing and administering tactile and visually-engaging surveys to capture complex social network data. It has been developed by a team of academics at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL) and the University of Oxford (UK). Network Canvas is widely used within the global public health community to understand the spread of infectious diseases, such as HIV.

New multi-year funding has been awarded to expand the scope and reach of this software. This work will involve transitioning our existing desktop apps to a cloud-based platform, developing extensive new features to increase accessibility, and designing an open API for integration into data analysis workflows.

We are looking to recruit a full stack developer on a contractor basis to assist with this work.

Our ideal candidate for this role will be a creative problem-solver with a keen eye for design, who can work efficiently across the stack to deliver high-quality implementations in response to a specification. Above all, we’re looking for someone passionate about using their advanced technical skills to develop open-source digital tools with social impact, within a small and eclectic team.

This is a fully remote contracted role. Opportunity to extend the contract will be based on performance, the ongoing availability of funding, and business need.

Job Activities:

  • You will participate as a technical expert in key decision-making early in the project, establishing our tech stack and bootstrapping our development.
  • You will be responsible for the specification, design and implementation of multiple complex features, with the overall aim of facilitating the development of a new cloud-based survey platform.
  • You will manage your own time to implement your work independently, with guidance from the senior development staff.
  • You will make key decisions related to the underlying software architecture and propose relevant improvements to the technical infrastructure to ensure efficient development as the project progresses.
  • You will write tests and user-facing documentation that covers the features you have implemented
  • You will also collaborate with the academic research team by facilitating review and soliciting feedback of feature specifications, mock-ups, and test builds throughout their contract.

Necessary:

  • At least 3 years of experience in NextJS/React development, showing a high degree of technical proficiency. This should be clearly evidenced through prior projects that demonstrate sophisticated problem solving, high-quality user interface design, and well tested code. NextJS experience preferred over vanilla React.
  • Strong knowledge of Tailwind, including theming.
  • Strong design skills, with a focus on the ability to design polished, accessible user-interfaces.
  • Experience with TypeScript, ideally including creation of types for consumption by third parties.
  • Knowledge of ORMs, SQL, and cloud database providers.
  • Proven record of working within a remote team, and taking ownership of feature design and implementation.
  • Experience designing and working with RESTful APIs.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Familiarity with Git and version control workflows, and an understanding of how to use them to manage code changes and collaborate with other developer

Bonus:

  • A portfolio website, showcasing your work!
  • Experience with migrating React SPAs to NextJS
  • Knowledge/experience with NextJS 13 App directory
  • Knowledge/experience with language localisation
