Founding Engineer - remote

Plato
Posted 2 years ago
Plato lets anyone build internal tools without coding. We make web tools as easy to build as spreadsheets.  We sell to companies building lots of custom tools to support operations.  We just raised a $2M round from SV Angel, the former CTO of Dropbox, and the founder of Quora, and are assembling a tight-knit founding team of exceptional engineers.

Plato is seeking a founding engineer (one of the first three), eager to democratize computing, hungry to earn an above market (2-3x) equity stake, who can rapidly prototype a web app at a fast growing startup.

As an exceptional engineer, you have many options.  You want to work here because you:
  • Believe in Plato's vision of live apps.
  • Want the impact that comes with being one of only 3-4 engineers, with the option of growing into a management or architect role.
  • Want to work with an experienced technical founder with a unique focus on code quality.
  • Want to receive 2-3x market equity in a lucrative field.
  • Want to democratize software development in the tradition of Alan Kay, Douglas Engelbart, and Bret Victor.

Technologies
If you're a smart engineer, we don't care much if you know our stack, but you should be comfortable with the functional paradigm and static types.

Tech Stack: Typescript, React, GraphQL, PostgresQL, Node, Prisma
Communication: Slack, Jira, Github, Figma, biweekly sprints

Responsibilities
  • Full-stack development. Approx 1/3 React, 1/3 Frontend object-oriented state management, 1/3 backend query optimization.
  • Technical architecture.  You will own the development of major initiatives, writing design docs, iterating on Figma mocks with our designer, and implementing designs
  • Programming Language Design.  Plato is not a traditional programming language. It's a low-code platform. But many of the design problems are the same, and you are the language designer, building the primitives.

About You
  • You have 3+ years experience as a professional software engineer.
  • You have an intermediate knowledge of web development.
  • You live anywhere, but work in an American time zone.
  • If you don't have a CS degree, you should be self-taught with equally broad knowledge.
  • BONUS: You have experience or interest in programming language design.
  • BONUS: You're a student of the history of visual software development (Kay, Engelbart, Victor)
Compensation
  • Competitive salary ($120-180K)
  • Beyond competitive equity (>90th percentile among seed-stage startups)
